For most jobs, the 3-prong side is just what you're looking for, offering the security and strength you need to properly torque your castle nut. For rifles with QD end plates, you can often only reach two of the lugs to tighten it down, which is where the 2-prong side comes into play, ensuring you have the purchase you need without having to cludge a solution together.
